Aurora Lighting Design offers imaginative lighting solutions and responsive team collaboration to deliver luminous projects around the globe.

Designing inspiring environments requires a sensitive balancing of project goals. Creativity and ingenuity must blend with technical aptitude and budget parameters so that spaces both feel and function beautifully. Many disciplines join together, each contributing expertise that will elevate a project to the exceptional.

Years of experience have confirmed for us that team integration and effective communication generate stirring, cohesive and dynamic outcomes. At ALD, our approach embraces collaboration, bringing our inventiveness and technical expertise in lighting design to a project along with our steadfast commitment to follow through.

“Aurora...has consistently exhibited tremendous technical expertise and attention to coordinating the details that help design projects succeed.”

WHO IS AURORA LIGHTING DESIGN?

Ours is a story of passion and integration.

Founding Principal, Leslie North, nurtured early, divergent fascinations with theatre, perspective drawing and science fiction, developing her curiosities through years of formal and informal education. As a Penn State Architectural Engineering graduate, she stepped into the building industry curious to blend her technical skills with her keen sensibility of the emotional value light can imbue into a space.

Now an established industry leader, Leslie gathered experience working with significant architecture and engineering firms while actively engaging with both national and international professional lighting organizations. She is a sought after speaker and educator, enjoying the opportunity to share insights on enhancing the human experience of space through light.

Today, Aurora Lighting Design is a team of professionals who thoughtfully identifies the psychological tone a project demands and then leverages a breadth of technical knowledge to creatively and effectively achieve the desired outcome.

This blended perspective allows ALD to create spaces that energize and encourage, environments that comfort and calm, settings that inspire and ignite, venues that enliven and engage and buildings, parks and open spaces that capture and captivate.

Sustainable practices are embedded into ALD’s approach to every project. Intrigued by the challenge of creating healthy as well as dynamic environments, founder Leslie North arranged the first holistic discussion of sustainability at the Illuminating Engineering Society’s (IES) Annual Conference in 2001 and was one of the earliest LEED Accredited lighting designers. Aurora Lighting Design’s portfolio continues to grow from these foundations, featuring energy-efficient, sustainable, and wellness-supporting projects.

HOW WE WORK

There are three fundamental elements that, successfully integrated, deliver a successful lighting design.

Spatial - the design must complement and enhance the architecture and vision for the space.

Psychological - lighting must provide the desired emotional experience of an environment as well has support user comfort and wellbeing.

Functional - lighting elements need to provide the appropriate amount and type of light when and where it is needed to support the intended function of a space be it studying, collaborating, playing or resting. Integration with building systems is also critical to ensure efficient and cost-effective operations.

At Aurora Lighting Design, we recognize the power of light to enhance and enliven spaces. Our solutions seek to create environments that address both the aesthetic goals and technical aspects of light.

We begin with a design charrette, seeking to reveal the project’s specific objectives and potential challenges. Investigation and testing combine with architectural software, mockups, visual evaluations and product samples to aid the design process.

We are committed to design and documentation that empowers owners to make informed choices, leveraging tools ranging from hand-sketches to sophisticated Revit models to effectively - often visually - communicate options.

From concept through Construction Administration, we collaborate with the project team to ensure optimal results including final aiming and adjustments.
